Learning objectives
The course provides the basic elements regarding the Integrated Pest Management (IPM): the microbiological and entomological risk assessment, preventive measures to avoid entry and survival of harmful biological agents, monitoring and control of microorganisms and insects that can cause damage in environments that preserve cultural heritage.
Expected learning outcomes
The aim is to form an IPM program coordinator within an institution that deals with cultural heritage. This coordinator is able to develop and implement IPM procedures and effectively communicate at all levels.

Course syllabus
This course describes the procedures and methods to prevent, monitor and control infestations and contamination of cultural goods. The course focuses on practical activities carried out in the laboratory.

Introduction to the IPM principles. Introduction to entomology, monitoring and control methods. Overview of microbiology applied to cultural heritage. Systematic of fungi. Optical and electronic microscopy techniques. Identification of a case study related to harmful biological agents. Inspection and sampling. Experimental plan definition to solve the problem. Laboratory activities to the identification of harmful biological agents and / or microbiological-entomological risk, prevention and control.

Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures and laboratory activities.

Prerequisites
Knowledge of general biology and microbiology

Examination procedures
Communication of the results obtained in the case study to an audience of scientists, conservators and curators.
Attendance is strongly recommended.

Copies of the material shown during the lessons and protocols of biological analyses.
