International Organization
A.Y. 2018/2019
Learning objectives
The course deals with the legal aspects of international intergovernmental organizations. It is divided in three modules. The first two modules are devoted to the exam of the most prominent international organization, the United Nations, with particular emphasis on its role in the maintenance of international peace and security and on the issue of UN reform. The third module is concentrated on specific topics with regard to which the UN and other international organizations exercise, or have exercised, different kinds of competences (such as outer space activities or peacekeeping operations). The course aims, in its first two modules, to prepare students to understand and to master the functions and structure of the UN and the way in which it works; and to forge their ability to place UN activities in new crisis scenarios in their proper context. This aim is pursued both through traditional lectures and through the active involvement of students in a simulation of the General Assembly work. The aim of the third module is to prepare students to apply their knowledge of International Law and International Organization to the specific fields of space activities or peacekeeping operations.
