Learning objectives
The course's objectives are the analysis and explanation of the main changes which, in the latest decades, have affected western advanced societies. The patterns of social, political and economic organisation are undergoing wide and deep transformations, as a consequence of a complex set of phenomena, such as individualisation, globalisation, the transformation of work, gender 'revolution', technological change, global risks connected to the environmental crisis and financial market turbulence. Hence, the idea of a 'second modernity', the 'modernisation of modernity', which challenges the premises and achievements of the 'first modernity', in a context of increasing tensions between a global world and the various and different local societies.
