Nutraceuticals are diet supplements that deliver a concentrated form of a bioactive agent from a food, which is presumed to have a physiological benefit. Because of their function, nutraceuticals are between nutrients and drugs, and may be used, alone or in combination, in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as cardio- and cerebro-vascular diseases. The course will provide students with notions useful to understand differences and similarities between nutraceuticals and drugs to be used in cardiovascular prevention.
Expected learning outcomes
Ability to assess the usefulness of nutraceuticals already available on the market, and to develop novel nutraceutical formulations, to be used in cardiovascular prevention.
