Learning objectives
The primary objective of the course is to teach an experimental approach to the measurements in the field of radioactivity, of spectroscopy and imaging techniques. Students are driven through the use of laboratory technology to artwork analysis and to the preparation of laboratory reports.

For the part of optical and analytical techniques, students are introduced to X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy techniques and visible and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy for the study and characterization of pictorial pigments. Punctual techniques are combined with laboratory experiences using UV fluorescence imaging, IR reflectography and X-ray radiography

For the part related to radioactivity, students are offered two complementary experiences. The first is based on environmental dose measurements due to natural radioactivity, by means of thermoluminescence technique. The second is based on measurements of activity of natural radionuclides occurring both in ceramic building samples of archaeological interest, and in soil samples, using gamma spectrometry techniques.
