Learning objectives

ATTENDING STUDENTS
Course syllabus
The course aims at introducing students to the analysis of contemporary forms of social stratification and inequality, and to answer questions such as "how inequality is reproduced?", "is contemporary inequality on the rise, or not?", "how much inequality can we tolerate in our societies?".

The course will go through the main classic and contemporary explanations of social inequality and stratification, as well as the mechanisms through which inequality is reproduced, for example through social mobility (or inheritance) and the inequality of educational opportunity.

We will also consider empirical issues, such as how to operationalize the concepts of classes and strata, how to build different class schemes or gradational measures of social stratification, how to measure social mobility and how to disentagle the role of education in the process of social mobility.

Erasmus and/or foreign students should contact the instructor for further information as well as for the course syllabus. The exam can be studied and taken in English, however the course will be taught in Italian
