Urban and Regional Geography

Learning objectives
This course will examine the most important contemporary geographic views that were influenced by the profound changes which have occurred during the last decades, activated by globalisation complex events. The appearance of new productive systems, the growing interdependence among various planet regions and the overcome of the traditional city-country relations, underline how on Earth complex historical, politics, socio-economic and cultural factors are changing material and immaterial landscapes acquired by the past. The linguistic and cultural mediator must know their redefinition and narration, in order to enhance his professional skills.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the candidate must demonstrate to have reached specific skills in analysing territorial relations on different scales. Hence, he should be prepared to read and understand the meaning of the social and spatial processes which describe the morphogenetic characters in the various urban and regional frameworks, immersed in the wider supranational and global dynamics.

Teaching Unit 1
Course syllabus
The first part of the course will describe the specific concepts, objectives and methods of the Urban and Regional Geography. It will also devote attention to the variety of geographies and to new epistemological paradigms: objective and subjective approaches, permanence and changes in environment, landscape and territory.

Course syllabus
The second part of the course will focus on the concept of region and its evolution over the centuries XX and XXI. In particular the characteristics of some regions of the Earth will be examined with a cross-scale approach and with attention to environmental and cultural factors of spatial differentiation. Finally, some of the meanings of territorial processes, will be studied between conservation, regional planning and local development.

The third part of the course will be devoted to the study of the functional organization of urban space in a diachronic and synchronic vision. In particular, the focus will be on cultural, economic and social aspects of contemporary cities, on the urban-rural relations, on the new forms of settlement and mobility, on the urban planning and on the new challenges of governance and sustainability in metropolitan areas.
