Learning objectives
The course, intended for postgraduate students who have already followed the basic Egyptian language module held in the Egyptology course, aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the Egyptian language in its various phases, with particular emphasis on the Ancient and Middle Egyptian, and to introduce them to the knowledge of hieratic writing. Classical Egyptian texts will be read and translated. The basics of transcription from the hieratic to the hieroglyphic will also be provided, with reading of texts.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student must have acquired an in-depth knowledge of Middle Egyptian grammar and be able to read and translate texts. He will also need to know and be able to apply the principles of transcription of texts in hieratic writing into hieroglyphic.

Course syllabus
The teaching programme includes the deepening of the knowledge of the Egyptian language in the Middle Egyptian phase and the learning of the basics of Neo-Egyptian. Ancient Egyptian tachigraphs will also be presented, with particular reference to the hieratic of the Middle and New Kingdom. In teaching unit A the study of Middle Egyptian grammar will be deepened with analysis and translation of texts. In teaching unit B the teacher will provide basic notions of Neo-Egyptian grammar and hieratic writing, with transcription and translation of literary and documentary texts.
Prerequisites for admission
Student must have successfully taken an Egyptology examination, including the teaching unit on Egyptian language, therefore having acquired a good knowledge of the hieroglyphic writing and grammar of Middle Egyptian.
Teaching methods
The teaching units consist of lectures, but the student is called to interact with the teacher (reading signs and sentences in hieroglypic and hieratic, translations, etc.). Exercises and texts analyzed and translated during the classes are provided to students via the ARIEL platform. On ARIEL, copyright-free essays or volumes are uploaded too. Through the explanations provided during the classes, the interaction with the teacher and the help of the grammar indicated in the bibliography, students can reach a thorough knowledge of Middle Egyptian and a basic knowledge of Neo-Egyptian, as well as a basic understanding of hieratic writing and its transcription in hieroglyphic writing.
Course attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The student's expected learning outcomes are ascertained through an oral exam. The exam consists of an interview on programme topics, aimed at verifying the knowledge of the grammar of Middle Egyptian and the basics of Neo-Egyptian. Knowledge of the principles of transcription of a text from hieratic writing to hieroglyphic is also required. During the interview, hieroglyphic and hieratic writing texts explained during the course will be presented to the student. The student must be able to transcribe and translate them, and prove to have acquired the required knowledge of the Egyptian writing systems and grammar.
Evaluation criteria will be: ability to present the acquired knowledge in a clear and exhaustive way; quality of exposure; competence in the use of specialized vocabulary.
Marks are out of 30 (minimum pass 18, maximum 30/30 cum laude).
