Learning objectives
This course aims to enhance students' ability to understand, discuss and analyse critically key topics in Arab culture seen in their own historical and socio-political context. During the two years of study, students will acquire a basic knowledge of the political and cultural history of the Arab world from the 6th century onwards, the key concepts of islam and the contemporary Arab socio-political context

Course syllabus
The course addresses three main topics:
1- Arab modernity - rethinking the nahda: we will explore some aspects of modern Arab culture, focussing on cultural debates and literary production at the turn of the 19th-20th century. In particular, we will reflect on the paradigm of the nahda (awakening, rebirth), which has been questioned by recent studies.
2- The political thought of Islam: this year we will focus on the concept of jihad.
3- Identity: the issue of religious identities in the Arab world will be addressed in a historical perspective, focusisng on conflicts, political changes and reforms following the so-called Arab springs of 2011, to understand whether and how these have influenced the global and local political scenario.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the topics treated in Cultura Araba I is assumed.
Teaching methods
As well as the titular lecturers, invited experts will deliver talks during the course. The Ariel website for the course contains a Course Blog, detailing the contents and activities for each class as well as additional references.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an interview in which students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of the course topics and set texts, and the abilitiy to contextualize, comment and discuss them in the light of the analytical tools provided during the course.
Part of the exam may be administered in the form of a written questionnaire with open answers.
