Comparative Literature

Learning objectives
Students learn to compare literature in their mother tongue in parallel to ancient literatures and modern and contemporary literatures. Comparative literature in the EC must be dealing with three ancient literatures, the one delivered to the sacred Judeo-Christian texts (to the Bible and to the "heterodox" production of the same area), the Greek one and the Latin one; more than anything C. l concerns modern and contemporary literatures within Western civilization: above all the French, the Spanish and the English ones, and additionally the German, the Russian, and the Scandinavian ones). Students are supposed to learn critical evaluation, transmission, re-elaboration, dissemination, translation and active developments of expressive facts in the contemporary world, whether they are thematic, stylistic or relevant to the ways of narrating.
Expected learning outcomes
The students should critically recognize and contextualize in time and space the various phenomenology which pertains to the expressive structuring of texts belonging to different literatures. With regard to the cultural climate in which they live, the students should be able to evaluate critically some developments of those literature operating as radical innovation in the contemporaneity and reconnect them at the same time to tradition. By their studying Comparative literature the students should also gain both a significant improvement in their knowledge of the modern languages spoken in the West and in their translation skills.
