Learning objectives
Expanding and reinforcing the general knowledge and proficiency of English are the main objectives of the course. In particular, the course provides the revision of grammar, syntax and lexicon - level B1 - adequate also for the preparation of the relevant language certifications.
Activities are aimed at developing communicative abilities, both spoken and written. A variety of daily topics are presented through readings, oral and written exercises and listening activities. Students are engaged in discussions, both in small groups and involving the whole class, so to encourage active participation.
Expected learning outcomes
The expected results that each student should achieve and / or reinforce make him/her an independent user of English, as specified by CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
In particular, each student should be able to:
-understand the main points of clear texts in standard English about familiar topics in work/study/leisure contexts;
-cope with most of the practical situations which can arise when visiting a native English-speaking country;
-produce simple coherent texts about topics with which they are familiar or in which they have a personal interest;
-describe experiences and events, express one's dreams/hopes/ambitions and explain the reasons of his/her opinions and plans.

Moreover, students are highly recommended to develop an active approach in their language learning process, thus promoting continuous and progressive improvement.

Course syllabus
The course intends to expand and consolidate the grammatical, syntactical and lexical structures of the English language at B1 level (Threshold of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), functional to the possible preparation of language certification exams. The teaching activities aim to develop communicative, oral and written skills in English. Students are invited to deepen the topics dealt with in the classroom through readings, exercises and specific activities as indicated by the teacher.
Prerequisites for admission
Access to the course is free, i.e. students are not required to have taken other exams before accessing the course. However, it is desirable that in the previous course of study students have reached a level of linguistic competence at least equal to level A2/B1.
Teaching methods
The frontal lessons are based on the topics proposed by the textbook and on the performance of oral and written activities, designed to be as much engaging and motivating as possible for each student. Supplementary materials are provided by the teacher with the introduction of video/musical texts/topical articles (in a simplified version adapted to level B1). Students are invited to propose topics of interest or "difficult" topics, so that the course can encourage real progress in the students' language skills.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final test is written and consists of exercises aimed at verifying some of the main grammatical/lexical/syntactical skills required by level B1 (as set out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). All exercises present multiple-choice questions. The written exam is passed with correct answers for 60% of the total items; the test ends with an interview in English on topics of interest and familiar to the student (see Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) aimed at completing and confirming the successful completion of the written exam.
