Learning objectives
The course has the aim to train students that will be able to grow, identify and solve problems related to main floriculture crops. Moreover, the basic knowledges of turfgrass production and placement will be described.
Expected learning outcomes
Management of ornamental crops in open field and greenhouse. Placement and management of turfgrass.

Origin and history of floriculture.
Floriculture in Italy, types of cultivations.
The greenhouses.
Growing substrates.
The different types of containers for propagation and cultivation.
Soilless culture.
Fertilization and irrigation management.
Growth control of plants: growth retardants, DIF and cool-morning, brushing, shaking, impedence.
Physiology and post-harvest technology of cut flowers.
Application of plant growth regulators in floriculture.
Plant nursery and propagation.
Biotechnology in floriculture.
Botanical description and cultivation technique of some of the most important species: rose, gerbera, carnation, gladiolus, azalea and rhododendron, cyclamen, plus a species chosen by the student to be presented for examination.
Introduction and economic importance of lawns.
Types of lawns: functional, ornamental and recreational, sports.
The species and mixtures used.
Cultivation techniques: seedbed preparation, planting, fertilizing, irrigation, cutting, weed control, phytosanitary treatments.
