Learning objectives
The course aims to provide:
- Knowledge necessary for the planning and management of the forest heritage, with particular reference to protected areas.
- Methodologies for forest planning oriented to productive aspects, landscape enhancement and protection of the territory.
This knowledge will allow the student to work in the forestry sector in a multi-functionality perspective and in the wood supply chain, with particular attention to the sustainable management of natural resources.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Autonomously develop forest plans, both in mountain and protected areas, and for the enhancement of forest resources.
- Interact with territorial planning processes in an interdisciplinary perspective, and integrating typically forestry aspects with those of other sectors.

Ecological planning: basic concepts. Elements of ecology of forest ecosystems and landscapes. Principles of ecological planning at broad scale. General aspects of ecological planning of forest ecosystems. Forestry sector in the context of spatial planning instruments. Forest planning at the national level. Regional forest planning. District forest planning. Local forest planning. Forest planning in protected areas. Forest planning in Natura 2000 sites.

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons given by the professor and integrated by seminars given by practitioners. Lessons will present the theoretical and conceptual framework and case studies. Lessons will be followed by a field excursion during which applicative examples will be presented and discussed, with the collaboration of practitioners.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Final oral exam with the aim to verify a) knowledge of the theoretical and conceptual framework; b) ability to apply the theoretical / conceptual concepts acquired to a given issue; c) ability to present ideas / opinions in line with the planning tools and case studies presented during the course and the theoretical and conceptual framework.
