Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the most important tools of discourse analysis throuth the study of French press text of metalinguistic, sociological and anthropological nature. A special focus will be dedicated on argumentative discourse. The course also includes a sociolinguistic module: the main sociolinguistic tools for the analysis of linguistic and sociolinguistic dynamics in the Francophone space will be presented.
This second-year course (1st semester: 40 hours; 2nd semester: 20 hours) can be accessed once the first year French language course has been completed
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to use the main discursive and rhetorical strategies in order to produce written texts (even workshop are aimed at achieving this goal) and to develop critical and argumentative skills related to oral discourse. They will also be able to grasp the socio-cultural implications of the linguistic varieties present in the French-speaking area.

Course syllabus
The first unit provides for the analysis of press articles dedicated to Francophonie, the French language and its varieties present in the Francophone space. The second unit will deepen the problem of plurilingualism and the linguistic dynamics that follow through the analysis of literary extracts. The third unit, dedicated to the geopolitics of French-speaking countries, will present the linguistic policies that characterize the French-speaking space.
Exercises
1) The compte-rendu d'écoute technique
These exercises are aimed at learning the compte-rendu technique starting from listening to an oral text related to the business world.
Attending students who have passed the intermediate test will be exempted from the written test n. 2 of the exam.


2) The dissertation
The exercises are aimed at learning the dissertation écrite technique on topics of civilization and cultural themes.
Prerequisites for admission
This second-year course (1st semester: 40 hours; 2nd semester: 20 hours) can be accessed once the first year French language course has been completed.
Teaching methods
The course consists of a main linguistic course and exercises. During the main course there will be student presentations on specific topics related to the course.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test (a) aimed at ascertaining language skills (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and an oral test (b) aimed at ascertaining language skills and the ability to apply the theoretical-applicative tools of the course for the analysis of specific texts.
The tests are both mandatory.

a) written tests:

1 - dissertation (duration 2h30 ') - the use of any type of French monolingual dictionary is allowed.

2 - compte-rendu d'écoute (duration 1h. 30 '): production of a written text of about 300 words starting from a recording of about 10' (2 plays) of an oral text related to the business world.



b) oral:
The oral exam consists of an interview on the scheduled topics, aimed at verifying the linguistic and content skills.
