Music at the Visconti court
Under the Visconti (1277-1447), Milan was not only one of the leading political centres of Europe, but also a prime location in the European musical scene throughout the later Middle Ages. This course will address the ways in which the court of Milan used music as an instrument of political and cultural propaganda and self-promotion.
The course is organized in three parts:
A (basics): Rudiments of prosody and music theory
B (core): Survey of music history, c. 300 - c. 1600
C (monographic): The cultural context of Milan under the Visconti. Forms and genres of 14th-century music
Under the Visconti (1277-1447), Milan was not only one of the leading political centres of Europe, but also a prime location in the European musical scene throughout the later Middle Ages. Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam, which includes questions about the materials covered in the course, as well as the discussion of a research topic chosen by the student and relevant to pre-1600 music history. The research topic must be based on readings selected by the student, different from those already included in the exam's bibliography.
