Expected learning outcomes
To understand that music is a complex phenomenon, with a focus on its intellectual premises rather than on its acoustic nature, studying its relationship to the period and context in which music is produced and consumed.

'Carmina burana': invention through reception
The 'Carmina Burana' are the most famous collection of secular songs from the Middle Ages. The course will explore the problems relevant to the editing of musical sources from the 12th and 13th centuries. It will look at the reasons behind the 19th-century "re-inventions" of the 'Carmina Burana', largely influenced by Carl Orff's homonymous work. Topics: Introduction and history of the codex. Cultural context of production. Analysis of the pieces. Relationship between text and music. Problems in the editing of monody. 20th century reception.

The student will produce the analysis of a piece chosen among those studied in class. Students who choose to take the exam without attending the class must contact the instructor in order to establish their coursework.
