Learning objectives
Object of the course is presenting the methodology of philological investigation applied to vulgar texts of all ages, especially to literally ones, transmitted by single or multiple witnesses. Deepen the knowledge of specific terminology, of different techniques of analysis, and the creation of critical apparatus.
Expected learning outcomes
Critical ability in the interpretation of vulgar and Italian texts; ability to establish meaningful connections between the witnesses of tradition by clarifying the history of the single witness and the work of the individual copyist, within the historical context that generated them and putting them in relation to the historical and biographical events of the author. Mastery of bibliographic and methodological tools related to the course. Awareness of the concepts and technical terminology of philology.

Module A: The course will investigate the formation of Petrarch's Canzoniere through the main manuscripts: the draft code (Vat. Lat. 3196), the Chigi form (Vat. Chig. V 176, transcribed by Boccaccio) and the Malatesta form (Laur . Pl. XLI 17) up to the last lesson testified by the autograph Vat. Lat. 3195.
Module B: The course will focus on the formation of the Canzoniere transcription by Pietro Bembo (Vat. Lat. 3197) and on the relations with the press of Aldo Manuzio in 1501.
Module C: The course will follow the genesis of the text of the Sermons of Giuseppe Zanoja, from the autograph manuscripts to the first edition of 1809.

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the fundamental notions of textual philology.
Teaching methods
The course is offered in a lecture format with seminar moments. Attendance is mandatory. Other work materials will be made available on the Ariel website. Class attendance is highly recommended.

An edition of Petrarch's Canzoniere to be chosen from the editions by: R. Bettarini (Turin, Einaudi), M. Santagata (Milan, Mondadori), P. Vecchi Galli (Milan, Rizzoli).
Students will find on the Ariel platform the cards prepared for the course and references to the websites from where it will be possible to download the reproductions of the witnesses on which the lectures will be based.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral exam will evaluate the ability to organize the speech, to critically present the subject treated, the specific knowledge, the terminological competence in the use of specific vocabulary.
