Philosophy of History
A.Y. 2019/2020
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with some advanced notions of philosophy of history, with special reference to foundational issues concerning the theory of historiographical explanation and meaning, and applications in the areas of philosophy of history, biopolitics and political philosophy.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student
- adequately knows the theories and issues in the philosophy of history of philosophy
- knows the core concepts, and the technical terms involved in the contemporary debate on the issues of the history of philosophy
- has a clear and critical understanding of the historical and axiological questions raised in the history of philosophy, with special reference to the following theoretical oppositions: individualism and collectivism, historicism and anti-storicism, freedom and justice, tradition and reason.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student
- is able to apply the knowledge and the conceptual tools in philosophy of history
- is able to provide a critical and informed approach to some of the main themes debated in philosophy of history
- is able to read and to successfully interpret philosophical sources in the field of philosophy of history, political philosophy and biopolitics.
