Learning objectives
The lecture course will provide the tools to understand the chronological and geographical development of the European prehistoric and protohistoric cultures, their ideological and socio-economic structures, their craft (weapons) and building (fortifications), the effects of the use of weapons found on skeletons (wounds, trauma) and, finally, their cultural and funerary self-representation.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the lecture course, the student will have acquired the ability to read the historical-archaeological evolution of European pre-protohistoric cultures in terms of material culture and ideology underlying war and intra- and inter-societal violence.

Didactic Unit A (20 hours, 3 cfu): Chronology, environments, cultures and societies of European prehistory.
Didactic Unit B (20 hours, 3 cfu): War and violence in prehistoric societies. Theory and method of archaeological investigation.
Didactic Unit C (20 hours, 3 cfu): War, warriors, weapons and fortifications in European prehistory.

Prerequisites for admission
Curiosity, willingness to work in groups and to actively contribute to the individual and collective learning process.
Teaching methods
The course will take place alternating frontal lessons with individual or group presentations by the students. The lessons will present images in the form of power points and the use of other media (docufilm). Visits to archaeological and anthropological museums in Milan are planned.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam consists of a preliminary written test and an oral test, both of which are obligatory, to ascertain the students' knowledge of the subjects on the programme.
The written examination includes:
- 6 extended open answers (max 20 lines) on general topics (12 points);
- 6 short open-ended answers (max 10 lines) on specific subjects dealt with in class (total 12 points);
- Chronological and cultural classification of 6 exhibits (total 6 points).
The oral test includes:
- the verification of the knowledge of the texts in the bibliography according to the specific indications provided by the teacher, the handouts and other teaching aids made available to the students,
- the presentation of a thesis related to module C consisting of a power point presentation and a written text of three folders (bibliography excluded).
