Learning objectives
The aim of the workshop, made for students of the triennial course for History, is to develop a path that allows participants to acquire the basic tools for the use and understanding of historical sources useful to study the political history of the early-modern age. During the ten lessons of the workshop we will discuss methodological problems, historical themes and we will be able to analyze original material contained in the Archives of Milan.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop, the students who have attended will have become conscious of the methodology and critical knowledge that will allow them to read, contextualize and interrogate the original sources, then put them in a more extensive historiographic framework. After addressing problems and methodological issues, analyzing historical themes and delving into the knowledge of documentary material contained in the archives, the student will have the basis to reflect directly on the sources and to understand the concrete challenges that arise for those who are familiar with historical studies. They will also be able to move through a basic bibliography and will know the main search tools available online.
The skills will be acquired through direct contact with the instructor and through active and effective participation in the lessons. The final exam will consist of the drafting of a short paper written from the material and themes analyzed during the lessons.
Students unable to attend classes regularly will made available to them the teaching materials by the instructor, with whom they can also agree to further in-depth readings.

Title of the course: Sources and methods for the study of modern history
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those required for the degree admission.
Teaching methods
La frequenza delle lezioni è obbligatoria. Il Laboratorio è costituito da lezioni volte a fornire allo studente gli strumenti di base per condurre una ricerca di storia moderna, con particolare riferimento alle fonti e alla metodologia:
- Comprendere che cosa sia la storia e quale sia la sua incidenza sul quotidiano delle persone e delle nazioni di oggi;
- Comprendere quale sia il ruolo dello storico all'interno dell'università e della società;
- Conoscere le principali fonti a disposizione del ricercatore;
- Conoscere le principali metodologie di studio della storia;
- Conoscere e reperire la bibliografia e i documenti d'archivio mediante gli strumenti di ricerca a disposizione;
- Elaborare in forma scritta i risultati della ricerca, adottando strumenti linguistici appropriati e applicando le impostazioni redazionali proprie di un saggio o di una recensione.
Queste competenze saranno acquisite in primo luogo attraverso lo svolgimento di attività in aula, con esercitazioni pratiche sugli strumenti di ricerca e sulle fonti, e in un secondo momento tramite l'elaborazione individuale di una recensione a partire dal materiale bibliografico consigliato. Il confronto in aula col docente è parte integrante del metodo didattico e mira a promuovere presso lo studente lo spirito critico e la capacità di applicare le competenze e le conoscenze acquisite.
Il laboratorio si avvale di materiale didattico inviato regolarmente dal docente.

- Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; ability for critical reflection on the completed work; quality of expression, competence in the use of specialised lexicon, efficacy, clarity.
