Learning objectives
The main objective of the workshop is to offer students a concrete opportunity to confront the methodological problems which result in the reordering and inventorying of archival funds. All this will be done through appropriate examples and through educational visits which allow a comparison of professional specificities, working practices and management policies of different types of conservation institutions.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will receive in the workshop a concrete idea of the different professional profiles and work goals achievable with the skills arising from archival scholarship; they will also be able to master at a basic level, thanks to the teaching tools presented by the instructor, the specific terminology of the discipline. The workshop calls for continuous discussion between students, in addition to between students and instructors on the various issues addressed, and encourages the habit of sharing critical reflections, based upon the approach with concrete cases of archival work.
Students unable to attend will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, investigate special readings proposed by the instructor to strengthen their knowledge, and of course contact the instructor both by email and during the office hours.

Course title: Practical workshop on archives
Prerequisites for admission
No other prerequisites are required than those necessary for the degree admission.
Teaching methods
Workshop offers students actual opportunities to evaluate method hitches that approaching archival funds involve through suitable examples. It solicits orderly discussion between students and teacher, on the issues discussed, and encourages the habit of sharing opinions critically up on definite cases.
Attention will be paid to the following aspects, according with general problems searched:
- to perceive the nature of an archival fund
- to recognize its structure
- to apply a reordering criterion to disorganized parts
- to define and describe archival items
Workshop shall allow students to appreciate job goals they can achieve becoming archivists. To gain this purpose, short stages in public and private archives are foreseen, in comparison with professional specificities, job practices and management policies.
The list of calls will be communicated in the opening workshop meetings.

Evaluation method: final approval with 3 CFU recognition. Attendance to workshop is mandatory.
