Teaching Workshop
A.Y. 2019/2020
Learning objectives
The workshop has three main objectives: to present, first of all, tools and strategies to effectively carry out bibliography research in OPOC, in the digital library of Athens and online; to introduce the ways to correctly use the various techniques of bibliographic citation and the primary software formats dedicated to the management of bibliography citations (reference management software); Finally, to introduce the phases of the scientific communication process and to make known the main citation databases and the tools for evaluation, bibliometric or not, of scientific research.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, the student will have acquired the knowledge regarding the techniques of bibliographic research, the main elements and stages of scientific communication, the theoretical principles and citation models valid at international level and the characteristics and functioning of the most popular bibliometric indicators.
They will also acquire the ability to use some of the main reference management software, useful during the writing of the thesis or any other scientific work, in addition to citation databases and Google scholar.
These skills will be acquired through a direct and ongoing meeting with the instructor in the classroom; The discussion around the proposed sources will provide additional time of critical reflection and methodological learning as well as bibliographic acquisition. Individual work will also be of great importance, with reports assigned by the instructor and then discussed collectively.
Although attendance is strongly recommended, students unable to attend will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, investigate special readings proposed by the instructor to strengthen their knowledge, and of course contact the instructor.

Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is mandatory. Laboratory is delivered through lectures aimed at providing the student with the essential tools to:
- carry out bibliographic research within OPAC, in the University of Milan digital library and on the web
- know and use the bibliographic citation techniques and the two main international citational styles
- know some reference management software
- know the phases of the scientific communication process, the international citational databases and Google scholar, the evaluation tools, bibliometric and not, of scientific research
These skills will be acquired through classroom activities, with practical exercises in the various tools discussed collectively. Discussion with the teacher during lectures is integrant part of the didactic method and aims to promote a critical attitude and the ability to apply the acquired competence and knowledge
Laboratory is also based on didactic material provided on ARIEL
