Learning objectives
to treat calluses, hypertrophic, misshapen and ingrown toenails, as well as painful feet, directly, in accordance with current legislation, after objective examination of the foot, with bloodless, orthotic and hydro-therapeutic methods.
· carry out, on medical prescription, the dressing of ulcers and warts of the foot and in any case assist, also for the purposes of health education, subjects with diseases at risk;
· identify and report to the doctor the suspected pathological conditions that require a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention;
· carry out their professional activity in health facilities, public or private, in an addictive or freelance regime.
· make use of the interpretation of instrumental exams (radiographs, ultrasounds, podobarometric and movement assessments).
· analyze the scientific literature and evaluate its results from a therapeutic perspective
· communicate effectively with the patient and educate the patient on appropriate and effective foot hygiene techniques.
· provide the patient with adequate information, based on knowledge accepted by the scientific community, to obtain informed consent to therapy.
· correctly interpret the legislation concerning the exercise of podiatry and provide assistance in compliance with current regulations.
· recognize their limitations in assisting the patient and recognize the need to refer the patient to other skills for medical therapies.
· be aware of the legal and ethical obligations of the profession.
Expected learning outcomes
The student must demonstrate that he has learned the skills to organize the workplace, the basic hygiene rules, know the dedicated tools, manage the basic and advanced dressings phases and know how to recognize pathologies at risk. Acquire basic knowledge of podiatry materials and their chemical-physical properties

Course syllabus and organization

Course syllabus
Basic notions of the profession and acquire a general knowlege in history of italian and european podiatry; specific tasks of the profession to understand relationships with other health figures and recognize the limits of their own professional sphere;
furthermore they have to acquire general principles of podologic performances through assessment of the patient and compilation of a specific chart thus providing datas that can be used either in epidemiologic researches or in the assessment of the specific therapeutic act;
learning of professional acts, of various types of instruments, tools and methods, struments will obtain all the knowledge needed to formulate a therapeutical protocol, will acquire basic principles for primary prevention and should be able to provide documents for legal purposes and quality control.
