Learning objectives
The student will learn to use basic chemical devices to perform chemical-physical analyzes (weight scale, burette, spectrophotometer, pH meter) in order to apply the theoretical concepts learned in the lessons of Medical Chemistry.
Expected learning outcomes
In line with the objectives of the course, the student after learning the safety rules of a chemical laboratory, will operate safely in the laboratory and will use the main analytical instruments (analytical balance, burette, magnetic stirrer, heating plate, pH meter and spectrophotometer UV).
At the end of course the student will be able to carry out analytical determinations by acidimetric titration with indicators and with the use of pH meter and will also be able to construct a working curve for the quantitative determination of the protein content of an unknown solution, using a UV-VIS spectrometer.

Course syllabus
1st exercise (in the classroom).
Tutorial on stoichiometric calculations used in analytical laboratories: problems on pH calculation, determination of solution concentration, oxide-reduction balancing.
2nd exercise (in the laboratory).
Safety standards in the laboratory. Laboratory instrument use. Determination of the Exact Title (molar concentration) of an aqueous solution of NaOH by titration with a solution of HCl 0.1 M.
3rd exercise (in the laboratory).
Use of the pH meter. Titration of an aqueous solution of a strong acid with a solution of 0.1 M NaOH using a pH meter.
4th exercise (in class).
UV-VIS spectroscopy. Theoretical treatment, Beer-Lambert law, quantitative determinations, working curve constructions.
5th exercise (in the laboratory).
Use of the spectrophotometer to determine the protein concentration in a sample. Dosage of an albumin solution by preparing a working curve

No preliminary knowledge are required

The teaching will be delivered through lectures with the use of slides and with exercises in the chemistry laboratory

Assessment methods and Criteria
The oral examination will assess the student's acquired knowledge of the typical devices of the basic chemical analysis methods. In addition, students will have to demonstrate that they are able to interpret and motivate the results obtained in laboratory experiments.
The evaluation will consist of approved / not approved.
