Learning objectives
The course is aimed at introducing the concept of English as a Lingua Franca and English for Specific Purposes. The main focus will be on the communication skills needed to succeed in academic studies, in particular, reading philosophical texts, and delivering formal presentations, and writing reports on elementary research.

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student
- knows the morphological and syntactic features of the English language, including English as a second language, and English as a lingua franca.
- knows the discursive modalities of English for specialized purposes and academic English.
- understands the relationships between language and culture, and language and society.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
At the end of the study path, the student
- can apply the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) both in general and in academic contexts.
- can communicate effectively in English, being aware of the communicative objective and selecting the communication strategies mostly suited to the context.
- can read and interpret philosophical texts and write short essays using guided sample activities.
- can deliver short presentations on philosophical topics, on the basis of provided guidelines and language patterns.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Lesson period
First semester
The course will have a blended format, with two classes per week delivered through online lectures using MS Teams, and one class per week in person on campus, to allow group activities. All lessons, whether online or in person, will be recorded.

Online lectures using MSTeams can be attended according to the first semester timetable, as recordings will be made available to students on MS Teams.



Recordings of the in-person classes on campus will be made available on the course site on the Ariel platform at https://mbaiteap.ariel.ctu.unimi.it .

Booking via app is required to attend the in-person lessons. The methods and criteria for attending these face-to-face lessons on campus will be published on the Ariel platform and the course on MS Teams.

Students who do not participate in the face-to-face lessons on campus will be assigned, where necessary, to an alternative online activity described in the material available on the Ariel platform at https://mbaiteap.ariel.ctu.unimi.it , which will allow them to develop the same skills developed in the classroom.

The schedule of lessons and all the details of the activities will be published on the Ariel course platform as well as on the online course on MS Teams. Any updates will also be communicated through notices on the Ariel platform and the online course on MS Teams.
Learning assessment procedures and evaluation criteria:
The exam has only a spoken section in Teams, in compliance with the guidelines provided by the University and following the methods described below (PART 1 and PART 2). Listening skills will be assessed through teacher / student interaction during the exam and not through the usual Information Transfer exercise.
PART 1
· Language check (grammar, vocabulary) with open /close questions..
· Test with open/close exercises on course content and skills.
Candidates will be required to answer questions, but also complete exercises that will be presented via text files and / or slides, and give reasons for the answers provided.
PART 2
Delivery of a presentation on a specific subject of the student's choice (e.g. an institution, an author or work, a course subject, etc.). The student must have carried out research on the chosen subject using the tools and guidelines presented during the course and made available on the course website on Ariel (e.g. use of search engines, websites, referencing etc.) and provide a collection of materials, including:
1. 7/8 (max. 10) printed slides on the subject explored
2. a list of references used (with at least 3 different sources)
The presentation must be sent to the professor ([email protected]), in Power Point format, at the latest 48 hours before the exam date, not for preliminary evaluation purposes, but exclusively to have the materials available on time . During the presentation, students will be asked questions about the chosen topic, the methods used in conducting the research and the planning and preparation of the presentation. Sample questions are available on Ariel.
At the end of the presentation, the candidate will be offered the evaluation which must be explicitly accepted or rejected.
In the online course and on the Ariel platform the details and exam dates will be published and constantly updated.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The course is addressed to students from the degree course in Philosophy. For a fruitful attendance of the course, students are advised to take the language assessment (Accertamento linguistico) beforehand, or in any case to have a B1 level of knowledge of English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The exam will be the same for all students, regardless of course attendance.
Evaluation criteria:
- awareness of the morphological and syntactic features of the English language, including English as a second language, and English as a lingua franca.
- awareness of the discursive modalities of English for specialized purposes and academic English.
- knowledge of the relationship between language and culture, and language and society.
- sound language skills for the analysis and discussion of written and spoken texts from various sources (websites, newspapers, magazines, etc.) in the field of academic studies.

The examination procedures for students with disabilities and / or with SEN must be agreed with the professor, after contacting the competent office.
