Provide the concepts of morphology, ecology, phenology,
physiology, genetics and agronomy of plant trees for basic
knowledge of tree-cropping systems.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Lesson period
First semester
The teaching will be mostly held as live online streaming. In detail:
1- Lectures will be held as live online streaming following the schedules of the Academic calendar using Microsoft teams
2- Field activities will be held in presence, if possible, or recorded and shared through the Ariel platform
3- The seminar will be held online using the Microsoft teams platform.
Course syllabus
CFU I. Morphology, anatomy and architecture of woody plants: roots, stem, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. CFU II. The annual and life cycle of woody plants: juvanility, maturity, senescence. Phenology bud dormancy, sprouting, primary and secondary growth, flowering, fruit growth and ripening. CFU III. Premininary analysis of the planting site: how soil and climate will affect plant growth? CFU IV. Species selection for fruit and timber arboriculture. Planting and management techniques: irrigation, fertilization, soil management. CFU V. Pruning woody plants: best management practices. CFU VI -Field activities: morphology of woody plants. Poplar cultivation. Pruning of fruit trees
Prerequisites for admission
Basic notions about morphology and physiology of plants and soil chemistry

Assessment methods and Criteria
An oral exam will be held after the completion of the lectures to check candidates' understanding and comprehension of the topic discussed during the lectures. The exam will consist in 4 questions focused on the lectures topics, specifically formuled to evaluate: the knowledge about structure, life cycle, and cultivation of woody plants; the understanding of key factors in planning and management of tree plantations; the skill to apply knowledge in practical cases.
