Learning objectives
The general purpose of the proposed course is to familiarize yourself with the French legal language through the discovery of the French legal and judicial system.
The specialty lexicon and legal phraseology will be discovered and studied through thematic learning units and progressive exercises highlighting the differences with the general language. Particular attention will naturally be paid to interference with the mother tongue and any semantic confusions.
Specific objectives: to be able to understand legal and genuine texts and audio documents in different branches and areas; to learn how to comment on a legal text as well as a case study; being able to express an opinion on a case study or article; to learn and to know how to synthesize a written or oral legal document; to learn and to be able to structure a written text and an oral presentation according to French standards; being able to communicate and to use the French language in the legal field in the various branches and areas of French law studied.
CECRL specific skills:
UNDERSTANDING authentic written and oral legal documents;
PRODUCTION of written texts and oral presentations in the legal field.

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand legal documents of various fields, as well as to draft legal means. Students will also have the necessary familiarity to use orally the specific legal terminology of the French language.

In consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic we need to set up with online examinations, the oral examination method is considered appropriate; it will consist presenting, discussing, and debating with the examiner about a fresh article relating to the legal field. Therefore, it will be assessed: mastery of legal lexicon and phraseology, pronunciation, morphosyntax, compliance with the presentation plan.
Course syllabus
The course will be developed on thematic modules composed of written and audio documents (autonomous study) of different nature and exercises of comprehension, use of legal vocabulary and expressions, written and oral as well as content analysis. Each module also includes an evaluation and a budget to be carried out independently. Topic: sources and areas of law, Constitution and national and European institutions, national courts, actors and procedures, legal persons, business, companies and professional relations, consumption, distribution and competition, intellectual property, fundamental rights and freedoms, etc.
Prerequisites for admission
B1 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
If necessary, and at the request of the students, we will try to provide revision forms for the independent study of the general French language, because it is a prerequisite for a successful approach to the legal French language.

Teaching methods
The course will last 30 hours divided into lessons of 2h30 each. per week. The lessons be given synchronously via Microsoft Teams and eventually recorded. It is not excluded, based on the evolution of the health situation, and in compliance with current regulations, to take some lessons in the presence. Materials to support the lessons will be shared on the Ariel teaching website.
Teaching Resources
The basic text used in class will be: "Le français juridique, Hachette FLE, 2012" of which a digital version is not available. Learning will be gradually integrated with written and audio authentic documents of substance. Also, " Le lexique des termes juridiques, éd. Dalloz ", is a useful complementary study tool for the jurist.
