Learning objectives
The course aims at providing students with:
i) scientific and cultural tools concerning the aetiology, the clinic and the criteria for diagnosis of the main work-related diseases;
ii) information concerning the criteria for assessing the loss of working ability and the levels of damage, together with the procedures for reporting work-related diseases;
iii) information on the meaning and use of the lists of occupational diseases existing in Italy and abroad;
iv) occupational diseases in current international classifications (ICD 10) and future (ICD 11);
v) essential information regarding the laws in the field of occupational health and safety.
Expected learning outcomes
The students will be able to:
i) do the diagnosis of the main work-related diseases together with the related principles of prevention;
ii) report an occupational disease through a correct use of the relative lists;
iii) address the various problems concerning occupational health and safety, both as object of the laws and as subjects responsible for the application of the laws in the health care system at any level.
Course syllabus and organization

Single session

The lessons of the first semester from 21 September to 4 November 2020 were held in mixed mode:
in the classroom with a limited number of students, who have booked using their unified e-mail credentials through the "lessonsUnimi" app (https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/frequentare-un-corso -degree / follow ...) and at the same time synchronously through the "Teams platform" for students not present; the lessons were also video-recorded to allow students unable for documented needs to follow them in sync.
From 5 November 2020 to 15 January 2021, face-to-face lessons have been suspended as per the Rector's Decree. Teaching continued remotely: the lessons were delivered through the Microsoft Teams platform, mostly in synchrony, almost always respecting the calendars approved for the current semester.
The lessons of the second semester will start in early March 2021 and will probably take place in mixed mode, with booking through the dedicated app, following the rules adopted in the first semester: in safety, in compliance with hygiene rules, with the use of PPE and observing the spacing.

Course syllabus
General introduction to Occupational Medicine, risk assessment principles and exposure; occupational exposure limit values, epidemiology and statistics applied to occupational medicine, diseases caused by physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical agents. The risks from mineral and organic dusts with particular attention to asbestos. Allergies. The risks in the health sector. Agriculture and its specificities. Italian and European legislation in the field of occupational medicine.

The latter include discussion of clinical cases and practice in the use of diagnostic and screening devices usually used by the occupational doctor (audiometry, spirometry, Visio Test).
Prerequisites for admission
Recommended prerequisites are to have passed the exams of the first 3 years and the following exams of the fourth: semeiotics 2, dermatology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and infectious diseases.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Written test of 30 multiple choice questions (4 answers per question, only one correct). For those admitted: discussion of a clinical case of suspected occupational disease found in the attended department of the hospital and answers to the teacher's questions. The minimum score to be admitted into the oral phase is 18/30. The final mark is obtained as a weighted mean value of the written and oral parts.
