Portuguese Literature

Learning objectives
This course aims to provide students with a general understanding of historical and literary evolution of portuguese and brazilian culture. An introduction to formation («formação») of national literatures of Portugal and Brazil is offered, with a specific attention to complex colonial and political history. For Portugal, we analyze the development of Literature from medieval origins to contemporary era, for Brazil we analyze the evolution of literature from colonial formation in XVI century until the culture of our days. Particular attention is given to the history of ideas (colonialism, imperialism, cultural hiper-identity, semi-periphery) and concepts.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: outline of national and imperial Portuguese history; formation of colony-Brazil and development of Brazilian Literature as national literature (colonial canon, imperial canon, republican canon), main authors and literary movements from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era; fundamental elements of history of ideas and conceptual history that help analyze the societies and cultures of two countries.
Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to read and contextualize some paradigmatic works of portuguese and brazilian thought and literature; ability to read three significant works from selected period; understanding of historic, cultural, and social implications of literary texts; ability to place authors, movements and works in their context; ability to analyze literary texts through the application of ideas and concepts borrowed from literary criticism, post-colonial theory and cultural studies.

The course will be held mainly by online synchronous online lectures using Teams, with the exception of some asynchronous lessons (video lessons) and some in-presence lessons with group activities (about every 15 days).
Students who do not participate in face-to-face lessons will carry out an alternative online activity that will allow them to develop the same skills as the activity proposed in the classroom.
The schedule of lessons and all the details of the activities will be published in the online course. Any updates will also be communicated through announcements in the online course (please read often mail @studenti.unimi.it)
The methods and criteria for attending face-to-face lessons will be published in time in the online course. Booking via app is required to attend the lesson in presence
Students unable to attend face-to-face synchronous lessons, can be considered to be attending if carry out alternative online activities.

Course syllabus
The course The Portuguese and Brazilian literature like an archive: nation and narration(s) between 17th and 19st century consists of the following three teaching units:
A: Contexts of Portuguese history and literary history.
B: Contexts of Brazilian history and literary history.
C: Ideas and concepts: rethinking portuguese and braziliana literatures.
The course provides 9 credits. It is not possible to acquire only 6.
In section A the reconstruction of the history of the Portuguese literature (from the Baroque to Romantism) will be studied, from a not only aestetics, but also historical and socio-political perspective, with particular attention to the formation of the colonial imaginary of national culture between 17th and 19th century. In section B the development of Brazilian Literature will be addressed, from a not only historical and cultural but also critical perspective. The Black Atlantic of luso-brazilian sphere, the slave trade, Enlightment, Romantism and the project of nations in Portugal and Brazil, the abolition of the slave trade will be the themes of the course.
In section C the concepts and ideas about portuguese and brazilian literature will study.
The course program is valid until September 2022.

Prerequisites for admission
The course is held in Italian and Portuguese, but there is no prerequisite.

The course adopts the following teaching methods: lectures, practical activities, presentations.

For each teaching unit, specific critical essays on individual works or on general questions will be made available on the site. Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written or an oral test with the teacher of the monographic course.
For attending students only (those who attend 75% of hours), a two-hours written test is optionally provided.
The oral exam with the teahcer of the course includes questions asked by the teacher and interactions between teacher and student. The exam takes place in Italian. The interview aims to verify the knowledge of the texts studied, the capacity for contextualization, the ability to expose, the precision in the use of specific terminology, the capacity for critical and personal reflection on the proposed themes.
All the results of the written tests will be announced on the Ariel page of the course.
The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the right to refuse it.
International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the teacher promptly. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or with DSA must be established with the teacher, in agreement with the competent Office.
