Students will be required to write a short review of a book agreed upon by the instructor. The best reviews will be submitted for publication in the journal Parlare di Storia, an online periodical in the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Milan.

Course syllabus
Since the origins of the discipline, historians have investigated the character, structure and history of their profession. Recent technological innovations and the rapid evolution of mass media have prompted historians to focus on the institutionalization of their methods of communication, including historical journals, founded since 1800 in various countries of the Western world. The seminar intends to address this issue from different points of view, providing students with the tools to know and analyze the characteristics of a historical journal.
The past and present of the main historical journals of the Western world, and the ideal reasons that led some scholars to found them, will form the subject of the first introductory lessons. Some practical lessons will follow, paying particular attention to the concrete characteristics of the work in a journal and to the differences that exist between divulgation magazine, scientific periodicals and divulgation websites.
Based on these theoretical and practical notions, students will be asked to analyse a single journal or group of journals. Finally, in order to obtain the 3 CFU provided by the laboratory, each student will have to write at least a short review of a book
