Learning objectives
The workshop aims to provide students with cultural politics, methods, and practices concerning the organization and management of events in the field of cinema. Each international festival possesses its own identity, which will be discussed in the first part of the workshop, comparing Cannes format with Locarno, Venice, Toronto and Turin. Besides the understanding of the principles of programming, the workshop will aim to raise awareness of the professional roles implied in those events, and in particular the artistic direction and the selection committee. The last part of the workshop, in which students will work in groups, will deal with the role of communication in the event construction, from the graphic identity to the promotional writings
Expected learning outcomes
The workshop aims to develop the following skills:

Critical thinking skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will display a sufficiently independent critical approach in selecting and interpreting the notions that are most relevant their area of study and to the broader socio-cultural context in which they operate

Communication skills:
By the end of the workshop:
- students will be able to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge and disseminate it to the general public;
- student will have developed basic IT skills concerning knowledge preservation and transfer.

Learning skills:
By the end of the workshop, students will have developed the learning skills required to continue their studies in keeping with their own research interests. In order to meet this objective, students will also develop relevant skills in the independent interpretation of sources and in the use of basic IT tool for bibliographic research.

During the ongoing covid emergency, the course syllabus will be maintained with the following changes made to enhance the effectiveness of the online version of the course, which was originally designed for face-to-face teaching.

Course syllabus
The workshop is structured in the following steps:
· An overview of the major international film festival: formats to be compared
· Discussion of the professional roles implied in such events
· Analysis of the communication: texts, images, promotional events
· Simulation of a personal contribution to the organization of a film festival
Prerequisites for admission
No binding prerequisites are required.
Teaching methods
Introductory classroom lessons, analysis of websites and festival catalogues; watching of audiovisual clips connected to some films or festival promotion; group activities to simulate the key roles in the festival organization.
Teaching Resources
Websites of international film festivals, like Cannes, Toronto, Venezia, Torino, Locarno.
Fragments of catalogues uploaded by the teacher on Teams, in Team folders.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The workshop does not include a final exam but the approved / unapproved assessment (3 credits) based on: attendance (mandatory) and participation, evaluation of the projects presented in group during classes, required writings.
The assessment criteria are the following:
- autonomy of judgement
- communication skills and expressive ability (also through technological tools)
- autonomy in the use of the sources and basic bibliographical and IT tools for research and scientific updating
