Learning objectives
The course is designed to elucidate the fine details of animal biology, anatomy, physiology and metabolism, introduced with the previous course (MFA- Fundamentals), so to provide a solid and up-to-date knowledge both on animal functions and on histological structure and physiological and molecular characteristics of animals and of animal food. Objective of the course is therefore to contribute to equip students with the necessary competences so that he can manage traditional and innovative technologies in many fields, and to contribute to supply cultural basis scientifically correct, necessary in order to form personal opinions with regard to topics of strong impact, like the relationships amnong animal food, environment and human health
Expected learning outcomes
Deep and up-to-date knowledge both on animal functions and on histological structure and physiological and molecular characteristics of endocrine, nervous and immune systems.
Cultural basis scientifically correct, necessary in order to form personal opinions with regard to topics of strong impact, like the relationships amnong animal food, environment and human health.

This course cannot be attended as a single course. Please check our list of single courses to find the ones available for enrolment.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Responsible
Lesson period
Second semester
Asynchronous lectures will be made available (videos consisting of slides with audio commentary), organized to cover the topics of each lesson of the course. The recorded lectures will be made available to students on the ARIEL teaching platform for the entire semester. Furthermore, synchronous meetings with the students will be organized periodically, using the Microsoft Teams platform, in order to provide clarifications and insights on teaching topics and answer students' questions.
Exams will be taken online in the same way as those taken in person.
Course syllabus
Animal tissues, with particular focus on: epithelial tissues (exocrine and endocrine glands), hematoietic connective tissue, lymphatic connective tissue and nervous tissue (4 hours)
Endocrine system and chemical communication (4 hours)
Nervous system and electrical communication (4 hours)
Receptors and relationship with the environment (4 hours)
Integrated systems for maintaining homeostasis (4 hours)
Stress and defense mechanisms (immune defense mechanisms and thermoregulatory strategies) (4 hours)
Biology of Growth and Development (4 hours)

Exercises (8 hours for each student equal to 0.5 CFU) divided into microscopy sessions that will allow the student to personally apply the knowledge acquired to the description and evaluation of histological preparations; interactive seminars on the main morphological and physiological investigation methods.
Prerequisites for admission
basic knowledge of animal morphology and physiology
Teaching methods
Lectures (28 hours equal to 3.5 CFU) which will illustrate the key points that students will have to deepen using the recommended textbooks and will stimulate the student to connect the concepts that will be illustrated in the various phases of the course.
Practical classes (8 hours for each student equal to 0.5 CFU) divided into microscopy sessions that will allow the student to personally apply the knowledge acquired to the description and evaluation of histological preparations; interactive seminars on the main morphological and physiological investigation methods. Attendance at both is strongly recommended.
