Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the general knowledge of the student on the main issues of contemporary history in the political, socio-economic and institutional areas from the last decade of the nineteenth century to the world of the post-Cold War, placing European events as the privileged center of analysis . The course will also focus on the main transformations of Italian society and institutions from 1946 to 1994.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to study phenomena and protagonists of contemporary history independently; widen to the national and international historical context any subject that is facing in the field of research or work; to concisely concentrate the problems and characteristics of a historical period or a territorial context; in a diachronic and synchronic way to describe the events of the contemporary period between the 19th and the 21st centuries.

Lectures will be delivered live with simultaneous streaming online.
On the course page on Ariel, students will be able to find all the information on the lectures and any changes to the programme and its related documents (bibliography etc) in case of lockdown.
The means and criteria for participation in the live lectures, which will need booking through a specific app, will be indicated on the University website.
Finally, in case it proves impossible to hold the exam face to face, the exam will take place remotely, in ways which will be communicated on the course page on Ariel at the end of the course.
Course syllabus
The course is divided into three phases: the birth of the contemporary age from the Risorgimento to the First World War; the period between the two wars and the totalitarianisms; the knots and protagonists of contemporaneity from the Cold War to globalization. Particular attention will be devoted to the role of Italy in the international scenario.
Prerequisites for admission
Good knowledge of European and international history from 1861 to the present day.
Teaching methods
Lectures will have a chronological trend, but will be organized in a monographic way (i.e. on specific themes, also with the help of guests and live testimonials), in order to allow the availment of the contents both in presence and remotely, both in mixed version.
The lectures will benefit from the use of audiovisual media and supports, which can also be deepened independently by the students.

As for the general part, in-depth knowledge of the lines of development of Italian and international contemporary history from 1861 to today is required, to be prepared by reading a good manual of contemporary history. The recommended text is the manual: Giovanni Sabbatucci, Vittorio Vidotto, Il mondo contemporaneo, Roma-Bari, Laterza, repeatedly re-edited. Furthermore, it is preferable to combine the study of the manual with the consultation of a historical atlas.

Next to the attendance and notes of the course and knowledge of the manual, a book chosen from the following is required for the achievement of nine credits (9 CFU):

As for the general part, in-depth knowledge of the lines of development of Italian and international contemporary history from 1861 to today is required, to be prepared by reading a good manual of contemporary history. Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a test that allows you to achieve a mark of up to 30/30 with honors.
The student is required to have a sure knowledge of the formal aspects of historical knowledge (dates, events, etc.), the appropriate use of historiographic lexicon and, in particular, the ability to identify the connections, on the diachronic and synchronic level, between different phases and specific areas of historical becoming.
