Learning objectives
The course aims to offer elements of understanding of the main thematic and methodological connections related to the study of historical communication. The course also aims to provide lexical and conceptual tools suitable for both scientific and popular historical communication.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce participants to the reflection on the practices of historical communication, opening them to the use of written, oral, visual sources and printed and online bibliographic tools. Through the analysis of concrete examples, students will be introduced to different methodologies of historical investigation and the study of documentation. At the end of the course, students will be able to collect and interpret data useful for the determination of independent assessments in the context of historical communication, including cultural and intercultural reflections, and the scientific or ethical issues associated with them. In addition, thanks to the specific focus placed on communicative skills, students will be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist speakers. These skills will be acquired through a direct and continuous discussion with the instructor in the classroom and with specially invited expert scholars for particular themes.
Students opting not to attend the lessons will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, deepen their knowledge of main topics through special readings with the agreement of the instructor, and of course meet with the instructor either by e-mail and during office hours.

Title of the course: History in Public Space. Practices, Representations, Uses of the Past

Part 1: The uses, reuses and abuses of history from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age (Marina Gazzini)

Part 2: Public uses of history and politics of memory in Italy and Europe after the Cold War (Massimo Baioni)

Part 3: History in Urban Space: rituals, monuments, museums (Massimo Baioni)
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the admission to the MA degree in historical science.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is strongly recommended although not compulsory. The teaching is delivered through frontal lectures aimed primarily at the acquisition of knowledge, competence and specific language of the subject. Discussion with the teacher in the classroom is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the capacity to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
The teaching is also based on didactic and multimedia material provided on Ariel.
In addition to frontal lectures, meetings and seminars with specialist scholars are envisaged.
