Learning objectives
The course aims to provide an overview on the History of Art (architecture, sculpture, painting) from the beginning of the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth century: from the Late Gothic to Neoclassicism (inclusive).
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: In-depth knowledge of the History of Art from late XIV to late XVIII Century.
Applying knowledge and understanding: After completing the course students will have the historical and critical tools to understand the History of Modern Art.

Lessons will be given primarily in presence in the classroom and in streaming on the TEAMS platform of the Course. Access registration to the classroom has to follow procedures given by the University.
Students will be able to find all the information to access classroom or online lessons, any changes to the program and any variations of the reference material (bibliography, etc.) on the Ariel teaching website.
If it is not possible to carry out the exam according to the modalities provided in the Syllabus, the exam can be carried out electronically with the modalities that will be communicated on the Ariel teaching website at the end of the course.

Knowledge of the topics of the monographic course must be accompanied by the study of the development of the history of art (architecture, sculpture, painting) from the beginning of the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth Century: from the late Gothic to Neoclassicism (inclusive). For this you can use any good manual. Please avoid email requests for a specific manual title. Visual knowledge of the greatest possible number of works of art is required. Is essential to visit Churches and Museums, particularly in Milan (Italian Touring Club guides are recommended). It is also recommended to study "I classici dell'arte" (published by Rizzoli publishing house) and "I maestri del colore" e "I maestri della scultura" (by Fabbri publishing house).
Knowledge of the basic concepts of historical chronology and main movements of Italian and European literature and culture is recommended. Classes are in Italian language.
MONOGRAPHIC COURSE
Fede Galizia
Documented in Milan since at least 1587, Fede Galizia lives mainly in the Lombard city and dies, ignoring where, after 21 June 1630. The transfer - from Trento to Milan - of the Galizia family, of Cremonese origins, must have taken place on the basis of the multifaceted father, Nunzio, also an artist, engaged in the world of miniature, costumes, accessories, but also in that of cartography. Faith - a programmatic name for the Europe of the Counter-Reformation - obtained an extraordinary success among the clients of the time, so much so that her works reached, before 1593, through the mediation of Giuseppe Arcimboldi, the imperial court of Rudolph II of Habsburg .
Twentieth-century studies, especially Italian but not only, have given particular emphasis to the activity of Faith as the author of still lifes, at the origins of this fortunate genre. It seems that the time has come to rethink the artist's profile as a whole, which she created mainly portraits but also altarpieces, intended for locations that are anything but local.
The course aims to answer the question: why was Fede Galizia so popular? What are the reasons for her success in the era in which she lived? How much did her being her woman have weighed in this? How does the appreciation of a work of art change between the long twilight of the Renaissance and today's world?
