Learning objectives
The laboratory aims to deepen the use of open data, administrative data and public statistics as resources for the study of social, political and economic phenomena, and will provide an introduction to the use of Excel for the management, analysis, representation and synthesis of different data sources.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will acquire:
- abilities to critically use open data, administrative sources and public data for the description and analysis of social, political and economic phenomena.
- skills in data management and analysis in Excel.

Course syllabus
The laboratory programme includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
- Open data, administrative sources and public statistics: what they are, how to approach and use them, potential and limits.
- The use of open data, administrative sources and public statistics for the representation and analysis of social and economic phenomena in public and scientific communication. Case studies on labour market, gender equality, epidemiology and Covid-19; and the evaluation of public policies.
- Practical sessions in Excel: Toolbox for data input, management, (descriptive) analysis and presentation.
Prerequisites for admission
No previous background is required to take this laboratory
Teaching methods
The laboratory includes both lectures and lab sessions in Excel. Students are asked to work individually and/or in groups. Lab sessions include group or individual exercises with Excel.
Teaching Resources
Materials will be provided by professor in Ariel.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Presentation of a data analysis carried out in Excel. Topic and data to be agreed with the professor.
