Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with tools for analysing and decoding scientific texts in English, strengthening their ability to understand and engage with the academic literature relevant to their field of study.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the ability to understand and engage with the scientific literature in English that is relevant to his or her field of study. In addition, the student will have acquired transversal skills such as the ability to critically examine a scientific text, and to recognize and decode the discursive and persuasive strategies employed by the author.

If the COVID-19 emergency continues, the course will take place in synchronous online mode via the Teams platform. The course programme and bibliography are not expected to change significantly.
Course syllabus
The course plans to develop the students' competences on reading, analysis and comprehension of scientific and academic texts as well as on conversational situations that take place in specialised contexts.

Specifically, the focus is on the following topics:

1) Scientific English and its characteristics
2) Anatomy and physiology of the human body and its composition. Main human body systems analysis
3) Infectious Diseases, Prevention and Epidemiology
4) Toxicology
5) Food hygiene
6) Industrial and workplace hygiene and hazards
7) Environmental protection
8) Scientific Research and Presentations: Structure and Organisation of a Scientific Paper - Its purpose and language features

The lessons will consist in explanations concerning the main topic and in practical exercises and detailed analyses to consolidate the content of the lesson. Each lesson will be integrated by online activities (video lessons, videos for listening comprehension, forums, material to be commented) in English on the course's moodle platform in order to apply and reflect on acquired knowledge. Such activities are part of the course and programme and must be completed in order to access all the material on the platform and prepare for the exam.
Prerequisites for admission
The course requires a knowledge of English of at least level B1.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons, group discussions and practical exercises.
