Learning objectives
The course aims to deepen the history of contemporary and current Spanish culture, which has been shaped by the phenomenon of migration to and from Spain, but also within Spain itself.
The theoretical foundations of cultural mediation will be explored, providing a systematisation of the discipline so that students can find their way through the areas, contexts, genres and definitions of "mediation". The cultural principles underlying the encounter with the other will be presented and intercultural competences will be explored. Possible areas of mediation will be presented and some areas (more or less traditional) will be analysed, from which future mediators will be able to acquire the necessary coordinates to be able to build a wealth of knowledge and experience starting from the recognition (and knowledge) of the Spanish context.

Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to refine the ability to understand the most significant cultural changes that have affected contemporary and current Spain, taking into account the outgoing and incoming migratory movements that have most characterized it since modern times. Students will acquire the necessary tools to approach the subject studied from an interdisciplinary perspective.Furthermore, they will be able to communicate the knowledge acquired during the course with linguistic and content-related appropriateness.

Lessons will be mainly held on the Microsoft Teams platform (access code available on ARIEL) and can be followed both in synchrony (as scheduled) and asynchronous because they will be registered and left available to students on the same platform for a limited period of 15 days. All the most important information will be provided through the course's ARIEL website.
Course syllabus
Course title: "Migration phenomena and the Spanish case".
Unit 1
The course will explore the systematisation of cultural mediation, the history and theories of intercultural competences in order to identify the areas and types of mediation in which future professionals may work. The reference context will be the transnational, plural and diverse context of which Spain is a particular example in recent decades.
Unit 2
The focus will be on interculturality in the Spanish context, starting with the phenomena of migration that have characterised the country since modern times. Starting from the long imperialist hegemony exercised by Spain in the past centuries, the aim is to overturn the gaze normally turned towards otherness in order to identify the keys to redefine the current European citizenship. The main migratory flows out of Spain will be studied from a diachronic perspective up to the contemporary age.
Unit 3
The spaces and fields of mediation will be studied through literary works, films and case studies concerning the theme of migration and, consequently, the current encounter with otherness. This last module will focus on contemporaneity and on migratory movements within the Spanish territory or converging towards it, all in the light of the European scenario of the last years.

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of Spanish language is mandatory since most of the sources will be examined in the original language.

Mixed distance teaching through synchronous lessons; PowerPoint material; bibliographical material uploaded on ARIEL.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final written examination will be aimed at ascertaining the ability to describe the social and cultural phenomena addressed during the course and to illustrate how these issues are reflected in the works and critical materials proposed. Students will also have to analyse the materials critically and with a good degree of autonomy, using appropriate terminology. The exam will be held in Spanish. The examination will take place in person or remotely, depending on the directives in force at the time of each session. Examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or DSA must be agreed in accordance with the relevant office.
