Learning objectives
The aim of the workshop is to provide students with the primary basics of the knowledge and skills needed to understand and evaluate, through the analysis of proposed case studies, the link between journalism and history.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop the student will be able to recognize and analyze the main characteristics of a historical argument from a newspaper article and the differences that exist between journalistic writing and historical research and to apply the critical and communication skills acquired.
Based on these theoretical and practical ideas, students will be called upon to analyze different kinds articles and editorials and to practice the production of texts that can be published on the blog of the "Corriere della sera" lanostrastoria.corriere.it.
Students unable to attend will be able to make use of the educational tools provided by the instructor on Ariel, investigate special readings proposed by the instructor to strengthen their knowledge, and of course contact the instructor both by email and during the office hours.

Course syllabus
Journalism and History. When and why independent journalism was born. How journalism changes the storytelling. How journalism affects historical events as they are happening. How the journalistic disclosure of history affects the current debate.
Prerequisites for admission
There are no specific requirements different from those requested for the degree admission.
Teaching methods
Attendance of the lessons is compulsory. The workshop includes a theoretical part and a practical part in which students will be asked to write historical disclosure articles. There will be a public discussion on the papers. In some lessons, war correspondents will explain how history is told while it is happening.
Teaching Resources
1. Reading of newspapers, weeklies, Internet sites dealing with historical themes, Rai Storia broadcasts.
2. Reading of the following books: Lapierre - Collins, Freedom at midnight (Harper Collins Publishers, 1975); Maurizio Serra, Il caso Mussolini (Neri Pozza, 2021); Raoul Pupo, Adriatico amarissimo (Laterza, 2021); Pier Luigi Vercesi, Fiume (Neri Pozza, 2017). Reading the cited texts is not compulsory but is preparatory to the discussion on some of the topics that will be treated in the laboratory: from fake news to commonplaces; fascism and anti-fascism in the public debate; from the Fiume enterprise to the sinkholes to the Istrian-Dalmatian exodus.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Method: evaluation at the end of the course.
Type of examination: in itinere assessment and at the end of the course, on the basis of attendance to lectures and on the quality of the essays.
Evaluation criteria: ability to elaborate the acquired knowledge; quality of the exposition; efficacy of the communication and clarity of the written texts.
Type of evaluation method: approval of 3 cfu.
The format of the assessment for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the lectures.
