Teaching Workshop: Traditional Musical Instruments: Morphology and Performance

Learning objectives
The laboratory is conceived for those students wishing to graduate in Ethnomusicology or Anthropology of music. It aims to illustrate the specificities of the music performed by traditional musical instruments, in relation to their morphological characteristics. Special attention will be paid to the instruments of Italian folkloric tradition. The classification of musical instruments, in its general aspects, will also be discussed.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end, students have acquired knowledge of some concrete cases of the relationships between musical practices and the morphology of musical instruments.

Course syllabus
The laboratory will deal with the morphological characteristics and repertoires of some musical instruments from southern Italy, the Balkan area and the Middle East, and West Africa.
Thanks to the collaboration with the "Istituto Confucio", there will also be a specific study on some of the main musical instruments in use in China.

Prerequisites for admission
The laboratory does not require specific skills.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons; viewing, listening and discussion of audiovisual materials; depending on the number of members and the sanitary situation, there may be practical examples with traditional musical instruments
Teaching Resources
The materials will be indicated to the students during the first meeting.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The attendance is compulsory, and there are no learning tests.
