Learning objectives
The course aims to provide tools for the analysis of environmental and territorial development policies, with particular reference to rural areas, in three dimensions (economic, social and environmental). It also deals with the relations among sustainable development policies, with specific reference to the agricultural sector and to rural areas, in Europe and globally.
Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that the student will acquire the capacity to interpret the economic facts, and the interactions among economies, as well as the main development lines of European agricultural policy in relation to the environment and to the international relations.

Didactic methods
The lessons will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform and can be followed both synchronously on the basis of the second semester schedule and asynchronously because they will be recorded and left available to students on the same platform.

The program and reference material will not change.
Methods for verifying learning and evaluation criteria
The exam will take place in written form in the presence.
In particular, the exam will be aimed at:
- ascertaining the achievement of the objectives in terms of knowledge and understanding;
- ascertaining the ability to critically interpret economic-political phenomena on the basis of acquired skills;
- ascertain the mastery of the specific language and the ability to present the arguments in a clear and orderly way.
Course syllabus
The course aims to give analysis instruments of environmental and territorial development policy, referring to rural areas, both in developed and developing countries. Contents of the course are:
1) CAP and rural development
ECTS 1: Evolution of the CAP (from the Treaty of Rome to Agenda 2000). The Fischler Reform and the Health Check of 2008.
ECTS 2: The CAP 2014-2020 and 2021-2022 transition period. The CAP 2023-2027
ECTS 3: Socio-structural policy. Rural Development policy and RDPs. The LEADER project.
Second part: Agriculture, environment and development
CFU 1: Economic development: concepts and theories. Economic development and human development. The dimensions of sustainable development. Development and poverty. Economic development and income distribution. The Kuznets hypothesis.
ECTS 2: International relations and economic development: growth and terms of trade of developing countries. Interrelationships between development, trade and the environment: the role of trade and trade policy;
CFU 3: The governance of international trade; World Trade Organization: principles and criteria for action. The environmental effects of trade. European policies for the environment and development.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of economics is required
Teaching methods
The course includes 6 CFU of which 5 CFU of lectures and 1 CFU of exercises and seminars.

The teaching material is provided by the teacher and is available on the Ariel platform.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test. The test consists of open questions.
The evaluation criteria concern the ability to present the concepts and problems object of the test with correctness, clarity and completeness.
