Learning objectives:

The main objective of the teaching is to transmit the basic knowledge about Tourism Geography, in order to develop the ability to analyse and interpret tourism systems, capturing the specificities related to the social and environmental dynamics and processes of tourism.
To this end, the theoretical and methodological tools will be provided to analyze tourism discourses and practices in a critical perspective, with a diachronic view, both at the local and global scale. Particular attention will be given to the analysis of the dynamics of tourism development in terms of social and environmental sustainability.

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: master specific terminology; acquire knowledge of the main themes, problems and reference authors of the geography of contemporary tourism; use of the basic bibliographic resources of tourism geography.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: identify the different types of tourism and their consequences on tourist places; apply critical judgments regarding local and global processes related to tourism and its social and ethical implications; ability to apply concepts and methodologies through observation and analysis of case studies. Ability to adequately discuss and expose the knowledge acquired.

Second semester
The lessons will take place in dual mode: face to face with simultaneous streaming (via the Teams platform). If the regulations regarding the management of the health emergency will change, students will be able to find all the information and updates on the Ariel teaching website on the basis of the information provided by the University.
It is recommended to consult Ariel regularly for notices and to consult slides and teaching materials made available by the teacher.
Course syllabus
The course will address some of the main questions in tourism geography. To this end, the lessons, divided into three modules, will address first of all the history of tourism and its evolution, followed by a focus on the main theoretical tools of tourism geography from an economic and political point of view (tourism supply and demand, cycle life of a destination, local tourist systems, ) and from the point of view of human geography (identity and motivations of the tourist, tourist imaginary, ). The second module will focus on sustainable tourism in its various forms, the issue will be addressed from a theoretical point of view with the support of case study presentations and seminars on examples of sustainable tourism practices. In the third module the theme of tourism will be discussed in the context of globalization, looking at the multiple relationships between tourism and mobility, accompanying the theoretical aspects with the presentation of some case studies.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of human geography.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test with open answers. The acquired knowledge, the argumentative ability and the expository ability will be evaluated.
