Course syllabus
During the lessons (10) the students will be shown the different stages of the editorial work in a non-fiction publishing house and in a fiction publishing house. The workshop will open with an overview of the "standard structure" of a medium-sized publishing house (organization chart, different professional roles, tasks and interactions between the offices) and the organization of a large group, presenting the current situation of the Italian editorial market. We will then focus on the editorial and drafting work, the central topic of the course, from the starting text (Word), delivered by the author, at the time of the print. All the different stages of the editorial work will be considered in detail: editing, revision of a translation, layout, bibliographic notes, references and indexes, image processing, drafting and proofreading, up to the management of the relationship with authors and translators. Finally, we'll analyze the promotional and distribution phases.
The aim of the workshop is to tell the students how they work in the editorial stuff of a publishing house, between the strengths and weaknesses of a profession, the copyeditor, characterized by obsessive precision, curiosity without limits, infinite patience and respectful humility.
Prerequisites for admission
Good knowledge of the contemporary Italian literature; basic knowledge of the history of books, press and publishing and very interested in the publishing market. A sound knowledge of the Office package is recommended.
Teaching methods
The workshop is focused on continuous dialogue with students. Several exercises will be carried out, partly in class and at home, specifically: a proofreading test, an editing test and a reference's compilation test.
