Learning objectives
The course aims to offer the French student an in-depth knowledge of the functioning of the French language system in the different communicative situations in which it is used, allowing him/her to discover the specificities of the different varieties in use outside France and to develop a capacity for critical reflection on the language.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: widening of the sociolinguistic knowledge needed to reflect on the functioning of standard and non-standard French, in the different social and geographical spaces; deepening of the notions of norm and variation.
Skills: acquisition of greater familiarity with the authentic uses of French; ability to reflect on the social functions of French in the different language communities in which it is used; development of the metalinguistic reflection capacity; extension of metalanguage.

Course syllabus
Course title: French between norm and variation through dictionaries
The course is divided into three parts:
A: The description of French in contemporary monolingual dictionaries
B: Lexicographical descriptions of geographical varieties
C: As a lexicographer

Students interested in acquiring 6 cfu have to follow the program of sections A and B; students interested in acquiring 9 cfu will follow the full program.
Students who acquire a section as part of the French language LM course will follow the programme of section C and will refer to Ariel for informations.

The course aims to introduce the student to a more conscious use of the dictionary as a working tool (in the coding/decoding phase of the foreign language) and as a means of information/research on the French language, so as to be able to take a functional and critical look at the information provided in the different types of dictionaries. Through the observation of the different types of dictionaries, he will be introduced to the social and geographical variation of French. During the first section, current and institutional dictionaries will be taken into consideration; dictionaries / glossaries dedicated to socially connoted varieties will also be dealt with. The second part will be focused on differential lexicography, which deals with identifying and describing lexical peculiarities in use in French-speaking countries.
The third part aims to combine the use of the dictionary as a working/research tool with metalinguistic reflection, through the observation and writing of lexicographical records of various kinds and the analysis/elaboration of short reading notes.
The course has a website on the Ariel teaching platform, to be consulted for all the communications, and a group on the Teams platform, where teaching materials used during lessons will be collected.
Prerequisites for admission
Lessons will be taught entirely in French. Textbooks and activities in class or for self study assume that students already have a linguistic competence of level B2.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The programme for sections A and B is evaluated through an oral test in french language consisting of an interview on the topics on the programme, aimed at testing knowledge of the contents and the ability to reflect on the linguistic phenomena studied.
The programme for part C consists of an interview during which the documents examined in class and the works carried out during the course will be commented on. Non-attending students will be interviewed on the bibliography in the programme and will make an oral critical comment on a glossary, according to the outline that will be provided on the Ariel website of French Linguistics LM.

The examination must be completed by September 2024.
