Cultural Anthropology (advanced)

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the concepts, theoretical frameworks, and methodological tools of Cultural Anthropology. The teaching will focus specifically on two areas of the discipline: the Anthropology of Development, and Medical Anthropology. The purpose is to provide elements of understanding and critical analysis of international cooperation programs, interventions, and public policies in the economic and health fields.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course of study, the student: a) has a fully adequate knowledge of the main theories, orientations and themes of anthropology, demonstrating the ability to discuss the salient nodes and critical points for each of them; b) acquire the technical language and know the specific subjects of the discipline; c) have in-depth knowledge of the bibliographic resources and methodological tools that characterize cultural anthropology; c) knows how to independently reflect and critically analyze the cultural, social and political processes that characterize the contemporary world, in the context of development and public health at a local and global level.

Course syllabus
The course will be structured in three parts or "thematic cycles". 1) The first, more general, which will frame the concepts, theoretical paradigms, and fundamental methodological tools of cultural anthropology; the second and third cycle, more specific, will address respectively: 2) international cooperation and development from the point of view of Anthropology of Development, and 3) prevention and health promotion programs from the point of view of Medical Anthropology in its critical declination applied to Global Health.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of historical phenomena and contemporary political and socio-economic events.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons with the support of slides, photo-video material and readings of texts in class.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam focuses on a final oral interview aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and critical skills acquired by the student. Attending students will have the possibility to discuss in class a group work on contents of their choice from the second or third cycle which will be evaluated as an intermediate test.
