Learning objectives
The course aims to illustrate the historical development of Western architecture from Middle Age to XX century. Specific moments and building will be presented as case-studies in relation with the theory and critic of architecture.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of Western architecture from Middle Age till today and of its connections with painting and sculpture.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Acquiring primary historical and critical skills and methods for the study, interpretation and analysis of architecture and for their contextualization.

Course syllabus
Title: History of Architecture from Late Antiquity to the XXth Century.

The course aims to introduce historically and critically the development of the history of Western architecture, with a focus on specific phases and buildings.

Part A: Italian architecture during the Fascist era. After a brief survey of the Early Twenties.....to be continued.
Part B: This section of the course will focus on the examination of some Renaissance and late Renaissance villas in Veneto and Lombardy. However, it will be opportune to start from more general considerations that will preliminarily frame the Lazio and Tuscan models, which are essential for understanding the characteristics of the villas in the chosen area.
Part C: .Late-Antique and Paleo-christian Architecture: imperial palaces and Late-Antique villas in the Mediterranean region.
- For a 6-CFU exam: Free choice of two Parts.
Prerequisites for admission
Adequate mastering of Italian language and suitable knowledge of western Art History, form Medieval to Contemporary age.

The Student must show the knoledge of the most important architectonics movements and architects from the end of the XIX century to the first half of the XX century. Any good handbook is accepted.
Further informations about the bibliography will be given during the lessons.

PART B - Students are asked to study in a good History of Art textbook at least the parts on:
Bramante architect, Raphael architect, Giulio Romano's Palazzo Te, Vasari architect and Palladio. And students are asked to study:
1) Howard Burns, La villa italiana del Rinascimento. Forme e funzioni delle residenze di campagna, dal castello alla villa palladiana, Costabissara (Vicenza), Angelo Colla ed., 2019.
2) Anthology of essays (approx. 120 pages) that will be made available to students on the Ariel platform (Storia dell'Architettura) at the beginning of the course.
3) The powerpoints shown during the lectures, containing images and texts, transformed into pdf files and uploaded onto the Ariel platform (Storia dell'Architettura) as they are illustrated in class, will form an integral part of the preparation for this part of the examination for both attending and non-attending students.

PART C : History of Medieval Art: any good handbook is accepted; R. Krautheimer, Architettura sacra paleocristiana e medievale, Torino 1993 e ediz. successive (Bollati Boringhieri): pagg. 3-219. Non-Attending students will bring ONE of the next books: C. Tosco, L'architettura italiana del Duecento, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2021; C. Tosco, L'architettura italiana del Trecento, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2022.

Not attending students must contact the professors to integrate the program.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an interview on the scheduled topics, aimed at verifying the student's knowledge, his critical thinking and speaking skills.
