Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the tools for analysing European figurative art between the 4th and 13th centuries, with particular attention to iconography and contextual relationships.
Expected learning outcomes

Title: "The Early Middle Ages: Experiments and Developments".
The course will deal with exemplary contexts of early medieval artistic culture in the West, relating them to the early Christian background and the developments leading to the Romanesque civilisation.
- Part A (20 h, 3 cfu): The Monastic Settlement: Early Medieval Experiments;
- Part B (20 h, 3 cfu): Italy Between Langobardia, Rome, and Byzantium;
- Part C (20 h, 3 cfu): Art and Architecture of the Carolingian Empire.
For 6 cfu: Parts A and B.
The Master Degree in History and Criticism of Art usually requires a 9 cfu examination.

Those who have NOT taken a History of Medieval Art exam in a Bachelor degree programme must first acquire a knowledge by studying the Handbook specified in the following section.

Those who have NOT taken a History of Medieval Art exam in a Bachelor degree programme must first acquire a basic preparation by studying the Moodle Handbook "Lineamenti di Storia dell'Arte Medievale" (link from the Ariel teaching site), chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The examination consists of an interview (also in English or French if desired) aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge, the historical and chronological framing ability, the critical thinking and the speaking skills.
