Learning objectives
Students will acquire and improve their ability to understand both written and oral scientific texts. Particular attention will be given to the lexical syntactic and pragmatic aspects of English for Law. Lectures will include lexical work practical exercises interactive activities and the analysis of scientific materials.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
Understand English legal papers that range from commercial contracts legal documents and corporate and financial agreements, as well as dealing with legal instruments, in both written and spoken English.

Course syllabus
The course provides students with the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to effectively manage communicative strategies within the fields of international business and management in English (B2+ level of the CEFR). The course will focus both on the peculiarities of legal English compared to academic English and on the reading analysis and comprehension of legal texts. Each module will be based on a main topic with a theoretical explanation and exercises in class, namely: International legal English and the leading features of legal English Legal systems around the world Civil and criminal proceedings Legal profession Contract Law Legal instruments General grammar review for level B2.
Prerequisites for admission
Before starting this course students should have acquired a fairly good competence in English level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). We strongly suggest further practice of basic skills for those who do not have this prerequisite.
Teaching methods
The course is organised in lectures and e-learning activities. A calendar of activities and their organisation will be given during the first lesson. Each face-to-face lesson will deal with a specific topic while considering particular linguistic features typical of legal and academic institutions. The theoretical explanations will be accompanied by exercises and analyses to consolidate the content of the lesson.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be written for all candidates and will last 40 minutes. Candidates will be asked to answer open-ended, and multiple-choice questions regarding the topics and notions that have been presented during the lessons. Same type of exam will be applied both to attending/non-attending students.
