Learning objectives
The course aims to provide notions that allow the student to acquire the knowledge related to the main biochemical-molecular aspects that are the basis of the biotransformation processes of xenobiotics and of the related molecular mechanisms of biotransformation regulation.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must be able to illustrate the main metabolic pathways of biotransformation, and to have developed a critical awareness that may be useful in reading and interpreting scientific articles that will be also objective of the final discussion.

Course syllabus
The liver: structure, metabolic functions, detoxifying function, liver damage and biochemical markers of liver function.
Xenobiotics: Phase I, II, III Biotransformation Reactions.
Cytochromes P450 (CYP), classification, polymorphisms and drug-metabolic induction.
Transcription and regulation of gene transcription in eukaryotes.
Nuclear receptors: general characteristics and history.
Nuclear receptors activated by xenobiotics: SXR, PXR, CAR, AHR and PPARs.
Receptors for endogenous molecules and endocrine disruptors
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of general biochemistry and human anatomy and physiology
Teaching methods
Lectures and analysis of the literature relating to one or more nuclear receptors

Presentations used by the teacher and scientific articles for the preparation of the oral exam will be available on Ariel site.
Assessment methods and Criteria
- the method and type of test: oral exam with PPT presentation of the chosen topic (scientific article)
- evaluation parameters: ability to discursively organize knowledge; critical reasoning skills on the study carried out; quality of exposure, competence in the use of specialist vocabulary,.
