Course syllabus
The course, entitled "La violencia de género a través de los siglos: del silencio a la literatura como arma" ("Gender violence through the centuries: from silence to literature as a weapon"), Held entirely in Spanish, it consists of the following three teaching units, which will be addressed in sequence (A+B = 6 credits; A+B+C = 9 credits)
A "El patriarcado y la mujer domesticada en la Edad Media" ("Patriarchy and domesticated women in the Middle Ages") (20 hours, 3 credits): we will historically frame the patriarchal ideology and the models applied to female roles; we will comment on the legal norms promulgated in Alfonso X's «Partidas» and we will analyze some episodes of violence against women narrated in medieval literary texts (the "Afrenta de Corpes" in the "Cantar de Mío Cid"; the "Conde Lucanor" and other collections of 'exempla'; the "Corbacho" or "Arcipreste de Talavera"; the legend of Don Rodrigo and the Cava in the Chronicles and in the Romancero).
B (20 hours, 3 credits): "Honra y violencia en el Siglo de Oro" ("Honor and violence in the Golden Age"): we will focus on domestic violence caused by the honour code and we will analyze the literary treatment in narrative and dramatic works (by Cervantes, María de Zayas, Calderón de la Barca and Rojas Zorrilla). Finally, we will talk about the historical case of Francisca de Pedraza (who in 1619 denounced the mistreatment of her husband).
C (20 hours, 3 credits): "Relaciones de pareja peligrosas y concienciación de la mujer (de Pardo Bazán a la contemporaneidad)" ("Dangerous relationships and awareness of women (from Pardo Bazán to the contemporary"): we will study works by women authors who use writing as a weapon of denunciation against gender violence (Pardo Bazán, Dulce Chacón, Ángeles Caso, Carmen Jiménez, Gemma Lienas, Aurora Freijo Corbeira). We will also comment on some films (such as «Te doy mis ojos», directed by Iciar Bollain; and «No estás sola, Sara», by Carlos Sedes, screenplay by Noelia García).
During the course seminars will be available for students.
The course program is valid until July 2024. From the autumn session 2024 only the program 2023-24 will be valid.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview in Spanish, in which the teacher will ask questions aimed at ascertaining both general theoretical knowledge (relating to the cultural age and methodological tools, according to the topics presented in class ), both the ability to analyze and frame the texts (the works and the anthological selections included in the course). In the evaluation, the ability to highlight the relationships between works, thematic analogies and ideological differences will be appreciated. The final grade is expressed in thirtieths, and the student has the right to refuse it (in this case it will be verbalized as "withdrawn").
International or Erasmus incoming students are invited to contact the teacher promptly. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and / or with DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in connection with the competent Office.
